Blog 87: Why Trust Is the Lever for Relevance in an AI-Oversaturated World, and How Established Experts can stand out
The social media feed is flooded. Pick the platform. What we see is the same.
Every day, thousands of pieces of content are published. The problem? A lot of it sounds... the same. Because a lot of it IS the same.
AI can write a LinkedIn post. It can produce a newsletter. It can summarise your expertise in a perfectly structured, SEO-friendly blog. It can even mimic your tone... if you let it.
And yet.
In the middle of all this noise, something has changed. Trust is becoming the scarcest resource on the internet.
Trust.
BUT… there is one medium that can help create TRUST more than any other right now.
Video.
The Numbers Don't Lie
Let me give you some context here, because this isn't just me talking.
“81% of B2B buyers say they trust video more than text-based content. And 88% say video influenced their final vendor selection.” (Levitate Media, 2025)
Let that sink in. It’s not the blog post or the LinkedIn article.
It’s Video.
“When consumers notice AI-generated content in brand marketing, they are four times more likely to trust a brand less than more 31% versus just 7%.” (Klaviyo / Datalily, December 2025)
Four times more likely to lose trust.
So on one side, you have a medium that builds trust faster than anything else. On the other, you have a content approach that is actively damaging people’s reputation.
The math here is very straight forward.
The human signal in a sea of noise is rare
In a recent podcast conversation with futurist Sinead Bovell, Gary Vaynerchuk made a point that caught my attention. He said that even in an AI-saturated feed, if a percentage of your content reaches real humans and produces real results... it is still worth it.
He wasn't saying that AI content is bad per se. He was saying however, that human signals in a sea of noise are rare. And rare things have disproportionate value, in this case, positive value.
What Gary understands, and what most established experts are still missing, is that the game has already changed.
We are in an era where your audience is increasingly asking themselves, consciously or not: Is this real? Is there a human behind this? Can I trust this person?
Video answers that question faster than anything else, not because it couldn’t be faked (at this point anything can), but because it is the medium that allows us to be more real, more authentically us.
But here is where I want to push back a little on the popular narrative... because I think "just show up on video and be yourself" is not very helpful advice.
I was working with a client who had never before recorded videos. It was painful to watch. And this is an expert with more knowledge in his field of Software and AI that many others… yet showing up on video was completely outside of his comfort zone. Don’t worry, the story has a happy end, as I managed to coach him into confidence and impeccable delivery.
Authenticity Is Not What You Think It Is
Here is the thing that gets confused constantly.
Authenticity is not about HOW you create the content.
It is not about whether you used AI to help draft your post. It is not about whether you hired an editor. It is not about whether you have a professional photographer or videographer or you're filming on your phone in a car park.
“Authenticity is about WHO you are.”
Your personality. Your specific way of seeing the world. The opinions you hold because YOU EARNED them. The stories only you can tell. The failures that changed how you do your work. The clients you could not help... and what you learned from that.
That is the competitive advantage that no AI can replicate, the LIVED EXPERIENCE.
Because AI can generate content. But it cannot generate your 20 years of pattern recognition. It cannot replicate the way you explain a complex idea in a way your specific client immediately understands. It cannot reproduce the exact tone you use when you are challenging someone's thinking, because you care enough to tell them the truth.
That is yours.
And video... is the medium where all of that shows up.
Expertise alone is not enough anymore.
It never really was. But now the bar has been raised. You have to show up in your own words and with your own face and do so in a way that effectively communicates your expertise and gives you credibility.
But What About Showing Up Well?
I want to be honest, is it easy to show up on video when you haven’t done it before?
No, it is not easy for most people that I have coached.
There is a difference between showing up on video... and showing up WELL on video.
Pressing record is the first step. It is not the whole journey.
How you show up on camera matters. The energy you bring. Whether you look like you believe what you are saying or whether you look like you are reading a teleprompter. Whether your body language says "I own this" or "please don't look at me."
“This is a skill. And like every skill... it takes practice.”
There is no correlation between the level of your expertise and how well you can show up on video. Trust me, I have seen impressive experts stumble on their words, just because a camera was pointed at them.
Most established experts underestimate this. They either avoid video entirely because they feel awkward, or they record a few videos, feel uncomfortable watching themselves back, and quietly stop.
And here is what I want to say to that: welcome to the club. Sometimes, especially at the beginning, it is painful to watch yourself. It is hard to find the right balance between polished professional and trusted authority and showing up authentically, as yourself, relaxed and naturally.
Every person you see showing up confidently on video went through the same thing. The difference is that the ones that succeeded just kept going.
Sometimes you need a coach. Someone who can help you find your on-camera presence, work with your natural energy, and teach you how to communicate what you know in a way that lands on screen the way it lands in a room.
This is not vanity. This is professional development for the medium that matters most right now.
The Discomfort Is the Point
I need to tell you something personal here.
I am a social introvert.
I love people, a lot! I love to engage in small groups, I love having 1:1 interactions, real conversations, getting to know people… and I find large groups sometimes draining (and intimidating) and after one of those I need quiet time to recharge.
Standing in front of a camera, being the center of attention is not natural for me. It takes effort and practice.
And for a long time... I let that be the reason I held back.
Until I got honest with myself about something. The mission I am here for... the impact I want to have... none of that happens if I stay comfortable. None of it reaches the people who need to hear it if I am busy protecting myself from a camera.
So I made a decision. The mission matters more than my comfort zone.
And I will tell you what happened. It got easier. Not immediately. But gradually, with practice, it became something I actually look forward to. The discomfort might not disappear entirely. But I stopped letting the uncomfortable stop me.
I share this because I know this is exactly where a lot of you are sitting right now.
You have deep expertise. Real results. Clients whose businesses changed because of what you brought to them. And yet... the camera feels like too much. Too exposed. Too performative. Too much of a risk.
I understand. I really do.
But the question I want to leave with you is this: what is the cost of staying comfortable?
Video Is the Bridge from Expertise to Trusted Authority.
In a world where generic AI-Content is flooding every feed with polished, but generic, technically competent content... in this landscape the unique signal is YOU.
Your expertise is the starting point. The years of real experience, the specific lens you bring to your industry, the hard-won lessons that cannot be generated... that is what protects you in this new landscape.
“But expertise alone without visibility will not turn you into a Trusted Authority”
Video is the bridge that can get you there.
It is the medium where your expertise becomes visible. Where your personality comes through. Where your audience stops scrolling and thinks... this person gets it. I want to work with them. It is a medium than fastest than any other helps people connect with you.
“Video content now accounts for 82% of all internet traffic. With 78% of people watching videos weekly and 55% engaging daily, this is not a niche medium. This is where attention lives.'“ (Insivia / SocialPilot, 2024–2025)
And the opportunity... for experts who show up as genuinely, unmistakably human... is enormous.
Staying Relevant in the Age of AI
Here is the real conversation underneath all of this.
The fear that drives most of what I see with established experts right now is not really about video. It is not really about cameras or lighting or whether they will say something wrong.
The fear is: will I still be relevant?
In a world where AI can produce a blog, a report, a strategy deck, a training programme... What makes ME indispensable?
And the answer is not to try to compete with AI on volume or speed. That is a race none of us will win.
The answer is to go in the opposite direction. To become more human, not less, be more specific, stay more present, be more You.
“The research is unambiguous. Human-led, personality-forward content does something AI content simply cannot do. It builds the kind of trust that converts.”
The experts who will thrive in the next decade are not the ones who produce the most content. They are the ones who are unmistakably, irreplaceably themselves… AND produce more UNIQUE content.
Content that is based on their experience: Thought Leadership Content.
And video is the fastest path to making that visible.
So... Where Do You Start?
If you are going to start with video, make sure your strategy is solid. The foundation of your expertise and clarity around what you want to be known for.
First you start by clarifying your positioning - what do I want to be known for?
Then by clarifying how do you want to show up visually to align with where you are going, not where you are at today
Being clear about what is the unique angle and narrative that you will give to your Expertise: your Thought Leadership Content.
And only then, start with video, not randomly, but strategically.
I always say that usually the experts that have the most to say are the ones that say (publicly) the least… let it not be you.
First steps with Video
Practice, practice, practice.
Start with your phone, turn it in your direction and start talking.
If you have never done it before, it will probably be difficult, you will look at the video and want to delete right away… don’t… instead, try again.
Say what you would say to a client across a table. With the conviction you have earned and with the specificity that only your experience can produce.
Do it imperfectly. Do it uncomfortably, if that is where you are right now.
Then do it again.
And if you are not sure where to start... or if you have been telling yourself for a while that you will "get around to it" but never do…
Let me help you get there:
What you CAN’T do is to afford the luxury of doing nothing.
Be seen as the TRUSTED AUTHORITY that you deserve to be seen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is video more effective than written content for building trust?
A: Research shows 81% of B2B buyers trust video more than text-based content, and video influences vendor selection for 88% of buyers. Video communicates personality, energy, and expertise in real time — something text simply cannot replicate.
Q: How does AI affect personal branding for established experts?
A: AI is flooding feeds with generic content, which is actively eroding audience trust. Experts who show up visibly as human — through video, real stories, and specific lived experience — stand out precisely because AI cannot replicate those qualities.
Q: What does authenticity really mean in personal branding?
A: Authenticity is not about how you create content. It is about who you are — your personality, your lived experience, your specific way of seeing your field. These are the elements that make your brand irreplaceable.
Q: Do I need professional equipment to start creating video content?
A: No. What matters is showing up consistently and communicating your expertise with conviction. However, how you show up on camera — your energy, presence, and delivery — is a learnable skill that benefits from practice and often from coaching.
Q: How can I stay relevant as an expert in the age of AI?
A: By going in the opposite direction from AI: more human, more specific, more present. Video is the medium that makes that visible fastest. Starting with a clear understanding of your personal brand positioning is the critical first step.
